Free gun safety locks will be distributed at locations around the state over the next two weeks as part of a nationwide firearm safety and education program.

"Project HomeSafe," kicked off by Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono and Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue at a news conference yesterday, aims to promote safe firearm handling and secure gun storage by handing out 30,000 gun safety locks.

After the conference, locks were given out at the Kaimuki Pizza Hut/Taco Bell at 3113 Waialae Ave.

Gun owners should not bring their gun to lock distribution centers and need not bring gun registration to receive a lock, officials said.

Oahu distribution locations over the next week are:

>> Waianae Taco Bell, 85-752 Farrington Highway, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today;

>> Waipahu Taco Bell, 94-050 Farrington Highway, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow;

>> Pearl City Taco Bell, 98-376 Kamehameha Highway, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Liliha Pizza Hut, 516 N. Kuakini St., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday;

>> Kailua Taco Bell, 121 Oneawa St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Haiku Pizza Hut, 45-1138A Kamehameha Highway, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Distribution centers will be on Lanai and Molokai on Saturday at as-yet unannounced locations.

Neighbor-island distributions next week are:

>> Lihue Pizza Hut, 3-3171 Kuhio Highway on Kauai from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday;

>> Puainako Pizza Hut, 50 E. Puainako Ave. in Hilo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 2;

>> Kona Pizza Hut, 74-5620 Palani Road in Kona from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 3;

>> Kahului Pizza Hut, 10 Kamehameha Ave. on Maui from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 5-6.
