ON THE SCENE:
MOONLIGHT MELE ON THE LAWNBy John Berger
jberger@starbulletin.comBEFORE THE MOONLIGHT: Robin Campaniano, CEO & President of AIG Hawaii (left), enjoyed a pre-concert party with Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, George Kuo (seated) and Ernie Cruz Jr., at Bishop Museum on Thursday. Kuo, who received the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts/Bankoh Ki Ho'alu Award in May, added the tranquility of slack key to the party for AIG employees and invited guests. The action then moved to the Bishop Museum lawn for a two-hour public concert by Gilliom, Cruz (both 2002 Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners) and friends Chino Montero, Kenneth Makuakane, Jack Ofoia and O'Brien Eselu. Gilliom shared the vocal spotlight with Cruz and Montero, and entertained the crowd with stories about the group's recent stay in Tahiti.
DA SQUID LUAU WAS NO KA OI! : Ernie Cruz Jr. (right) congratulated chef Iva Kinimaka on the quality of the Hawaiian buffet -- particularly the squid luau at AIG's private party. Kinimaka's friends knew of his culinary skills back when he was a Waikiki showroom headliner; his company, Iva's Komplete Katering, was the perfect choice to caterer a Hawaiian concert at Hawaii's foremost Hawaiian museum.
