Metzger-Wong reaches
Swiss Open semifinals

Punahou products Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong won their third straight match to reach the semifinals of the Swiss Open FIVB volleyball tournament yesterday.

They play 25th-seeded Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran of Brazil in today's first semifinal match.

Metzger and Wong advanced with a 22-20, 21-15 win over 28th-seeded Julius Brink and Kjell Schneider of Germany to win Pool E with a 3-0 mark after defeating teams from Japan and Austria on Friday.

Metzger and Wong, playing in their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event this season after missing the opener in Germany last weekend, advanced to the semifinals with a 21-12, 13-21 and 15-12 win over 30th-seeded Markus Egger and Sascha Heyer of Switzerland in 56 minutes.

Metzger and Wong finished the 2001 season with three pro beach titles, including domestic wins in California last August at Santa Barbara and Manhattan Beach.

The pair also posted international podium finishes with bronze medals at Marseille, France and Brisbane, Australia (2001 Goodwill Games). Wong was also the AVP's 2001 King of the Beach.

Todd Rogers and Punahou's Sean Scott placed 25th to share $1,650 after finishing pool play 1-2 with their only win coming against 23rd seeded Stephane Canet and Mathieu Hamet of France.

May-Walsh wins gold: Misty May and Kerri Walsh proved that their title in the 2002 Beach Volleyball World Tour season opener was no mistake as the Americans defeated top-seeded Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil for the $22,500 first-place prize.

Spain earns Olympic berth at Kaneohe Bay

Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez of Spain held onto their two-day lead to capture the 49er World Championship regatta yesterday at Kaneohe Bay.

The win in the 10 race series earned them a berth in the 2004 Olympics at Athens, Greece.

The top nine finishers earned berths in the Olympics, including three boats from Great Britan.

The United States team of Morgan larson and Ed Smyth missed the cut by only three points, scoring 73 to the Netherlands' 70.

Vili to mingle with state rep at QB Club

State Representative Guy Ontai will be the featured speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club. Ontai will present his thoughts regarding possible changes to the state high school athletic structure.

Also on the agenda will be UH mascots Vili and Linda Fehoko.

In addition, Gwen Earll, executive director of Hawaii State PONY Baseball, will talk about Hawaii's chances for a repeat in the national PONY baseball tournament.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu; program begins promptly at noon.

Miano speed camp up and running again

The Rich Miano Speed and Quickness Clinic will hold its second session June 29 and 30 at the St. Louis School football field.

There are two sessions each day. The morning session for youngsters age 9 to 12 runs from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The afternoon session for age 13 and up runs from 1:45 to 5:15 p.m.
