1974: 2 special days vanish
during business trip to Guam

THE Gap: Richard Cooke Jr. is a little concerned about the generation gap. His 16-year-old daughter, Cynthia, as a birthday gift presented him with the best-selling book, "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask)." (June 25, 1970) ...

IF the Coast Guard only knew! Hillsiders with binoculars on the ocean got quite a treat one day last week. There was restaurateur Rocky Aoki and his buxom, blond girlfriend out on a promotional tour off Waikiki with three Japanese models who were posing in the altogether for photos that will appear in a Tokyo magazine. Prayboy? (June 28, 1971) ...

A SWEET old lady from South Carolina named Mrs. Ann Richardson was being recognized in the audience by the Society of Seven because she was celebrating a wedding anniversary. "How long have you been married?" leader Tony Ruivivar asked. Mrs. Richardson broke up the group -- and the audience -- by replying, "Long enough that I'd rather kiss you all instead." (June 28, 1973) ...

WE'VE heard of people forgetting an anniversary or even losing an anniversary present -- but losing an anniversary? That's what happened to local Xerox exec Tom Francisco. Last Saturday was the special day, but he had to leave for Guam on business the day before, arriving there on Sunday, thanks to the International Date Line. Wife Betty's birthday was also on Saturday, so he managed to miss both big days altogether. (June 27, 1974) ...

WANT to know who the lucky lady was who had dinner with Cary Grant at Canlis? Still bedazzled after the experience is Phyllis Spalding, the socialite interior decorator, who describes Grant as an "absolutely dreamy man." (June 29, 1976) ...

WHEN Deborah Duda decided to open a special tour package for children 7-11 on Kauai, she came up with a great name: Zippity Duda Children's Tours ... Among noncredit classes being offered at the Hemenway Craft Center at UH this summer are "Bartending," "Winetasting" and "Darkroom Techniques," though not necessarily in that order. (June 26, 1984) ...

World Cup soccer too tame for you? Then you might want to check out Kapiolani Park at 4 p.m. Tuesday when the French national rugby team takes on Hawaii's top players representing the "Kingdom of Hawaii" in fierce competition. The French are acknowledged to be among the three or four best national teams in the world, and the locals are merely hoping to hold the score down, but it should be a demonstration of athletic prowess any sports fan could appreciate. Another French team, a club called Toulon, will take on the Hawaii Harlequins after the main match. (June 27, 1986) ...

WHEN "Magnum, P.I." star Tom Selleck showed up in San Francisco for the American Academy of Achievement's "Salute to Excellence" weekend, he was sporting a full beard. Handsome is as handsome does, somebody once said, and Selleck looks just as striking hirsute as with his trademark "Magnum" mustache. He was also candid in some of his remarks. For example, he told the audience, "I didn't actually go to USC on a basketball scholarship, like my agent tells everyone. I had to go to junior college for two years first. And when I did get into USC, I only scored four points in two years." He plays a mean game of softball, though. (June 28, 1989) ...

THEN there's beer distributor Bob Bulkley and his fiancee, Sherri Rienzi of Hawaiian Trust. In a classic case of getting things backward, the two are losing their independence on July 4 when they get married. As James Thurber once wrote, "He gets everything backward -- he'll probably honeymoon in the Virgin Islands." That's vergin' on the ridiculous in the case of Bulkley and Rienzi -- they're heading for Denver. Bulkley grew up there and is a ski buff. Of course, it will be July and there will be no snow -- there he goes again. (June 28, 1991) ...
