50 years of wedded bliss

ONWARD: Orby and Ruth Groves had 300 guests for dinner at the Sheraton Waikiki last weekend to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Orby, a former HPD assistant chief, and Ruth have known each other since Stevenson Intermediate days. Both are 1949 Roosevelt High grads. "She was chasing me in the seventh grade in Stevenson and finally caught me," says Orby. Wait until Ruth reads that. Entertainment was provided mostly by family members with an assist from pro Nohelani Cypriano. The Groves girls sing well. Orby and Ruth have six children -- Stacey Mroch, Orby Jr., twins Kathy Sekiya and Cynthia Farias, Michael, and Jolyn Tenn. Stacey got laughs presenting a family slide show. After serving in the Korean War, Orby spent 30 years with HPD, retiring in 1983. He joined the U.S. Internal Revenue Service the day after he retired and is still working. Sandy and Gwen Gomes, who have also been married 50 years, were recognized too ...

Making his Case

Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Rep. Ed Case was shaking hands at the recent Black Tie and Blue Jeans Heart Association benefit at the Kahala Mandarin. He took advantage of a "photo op" and got into a group shot with the people at tables purchased by Carla Kirkeby and Margaret Murchie. GOP state Senate hopeful Jake Wurthner was in the picture. Diane Brusin chaired the affair. Co-chairs were Paul Sheriff and Gladys Vernoy ...

Both the U.S. and host South Korea teams surprised the soccer world with their great showing in the World Cup. Excitement was high in Nam and Kimberly Hyun's home when the U.S. and South Korea tied, 1-1. Nam, a Neiman employee, and Kimberly were born in South Korea. He cheered for the Koreans, she yelled for both teams, son Joon, 11, pulled for the Koreans, son Dwight, 8, and daughter Gina 7, screamed for the United States ... The UH volleyball champs and their Polynesian drum-beating supporters are pictured roaring with happiness after defeating Pepperdine for the title in Sports Illustrated's June 10 issue ...

Rocking on

The Rock created excitement when the big guy walked into Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab last week and feasted on a teri beef-and-chicken combo, Cajun sashimi and a big bowl of steamed broccoli ... Kincaid's Great Alaska Seafood Festival offering Copper River King salmon ends this weekend ... Alice Clay took retired UH Professor Eleanor Bilsborrow to lunch at On On Wednesday for her 87th birthday. Also attending were retired UH Professor Pat O'Brien, 90 ... Friends of isle real estate power Mary Worrall are tossing a '60s-themed birthday party for her next Saturday ...

Those of us at the Star-Bulletin who worked with Jack Wyatt are shocked that he could come to such a violent end. Easygoing Jack, 71, was killed Tuesday when he was pushed into the Ala Wai Canal and hit his head on rocks. It just doesn't make sense ...
