SIGNS of the Times: Controversy swirls around whether the placement of signs for political wannabes should be regulated regarding how soon before an election they can be put up. And letters to the editors come in right and left (so to speak) arguing as to whether political sign-waving is a dangerous enterprise, distracting people from potential danger. If politicians can go about waving signs, why not cafes, or lingerie shops or affordable casket enterprises? One enterprising duo, filmmakers Gene Cajayon and John Manal Castro, have taken to waving signs in Kalihi, Waipahu and on Kapiolani Blvd. that read "Watch Our Movie." The two have been showing their Filipino-American independent film, "The Debut" in Honolulu ... Curbing your enthusiasm

Man in the White Suit
CUTTING quite a swath in his handsome white suit at the wedding of Jed Davis and Karen Park was Christopher Mitchum, son of actor Robert Mitchum. Christopher is the uncle to the groom, who just found out that the white suit Uncle Chris wore was the same suit worn by his dad in the film, "Cape Fear." ... I first met Four Seasons Maui G.M. Radha Arora at the Kahala Mandarin at the Hale 'Aina Awards, so it stood to reason that while strolling through the Pacific Cafe at the Four Seasons I'd run into Kahala Mandarin G.M. Dangerous knowledge
NATIONAL TV baseball play-by-play man Dave O'Brien, introducing rookie Marcus Thames on the air, said, "You'd think he'd pronounce it like the river in London, but he pronounces it "Tems." Funny, that's just how they pronounce the river in London. O'Brien, apparently, calls it "Theyms." ... And Channel 9's Stephanie Lum is as pretty as can be, but young. How else do you suppose she pronounced one of John Dean's "Deep Throat" suspects "Ron Zuy-gler" instead of "Zee-gler." I figure she'd never heard of the former press secretary ...And did you notice that nearly every night one anchorperson or another across the TV spectrum "has the night off." Makes you wonder if you're not in the wrong business ...JOINING the staffers of Hawaii Public Television during its Live Membership Drive tomorrow night will be promoter Tom Moffatt. He'll be helping the PBS folks offer special concert packages for Uncle Tom's '70s Soul Jam Concert on July 23 at the Blaisdell Arena. Each package contains a paiar of concert tickets and VIP backstage passes to meet some old soul stars at a pre-show champagne party ...
Live Mermaids
HELPING the YWCA celebrate its 75th anniversary tonight at Laniakea on Richards Street will be the synchonized swimmming group "Mermaids Hawaii." They've been performing in Honolulu for more than 30 years and used to do live shows at the Laniakea pool, so there'll be a bit of nostalgia involved. A $1.5 milllion health and fitness center will also be unveiled tonight. Julia Morgan, who designed the imposing San Simeon castle for William Randolph Hearst, also designed the Richards Street YWCA building ...
