'Depression and dementia' is topic of Saturday discussion

The Alzheimer's Association's Aloha Chapter will sponsor a talk on "Depression & Dementia" from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the fifth floor of the Weinberg Building, St. Francis Medical Center, 2226 Liliha St.

The guest speaker will be Kathleen S. Brown, president of Health Psychology Associates Inc. and director of the Pain Rehabilitation Program at Tripler Army Medical Center.

Up to 70 percent of caregivers and 40 percent of people diagnosed with dementia experience depression some time during the course of the disease, said the local Alzheimer's chapter.

Brown will discuss how to recognize depression and treatment options, such as medication, therapy, support groups and activities. Brown, a health and rehabilitation psychologist who specializes in gerontology, works primarily with people who have acute and chronic medical illnesses and disabilities. Her presentation is geared to seniors, family and professional caregivers, and health care and social service professionals.

There is no cost for the workshop, but donations are welcome. Certificates will be given upon request. To make reservations or obtain more information, call 591-2771.

Tour of Castle's new wellness center available

Windward residents are invited to the opening of Castle Medical Center's new Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Medical Plaza and Wellness Center from 3 to 5 p.m. tomorrow.

A formal blessing, entertainment, demonstrations, free health screenings and tours will be held.

The $10 million Medical Plaza & Wellness Center, a three-story, 38,500-square foot building, "brings our patients and physicians closer together right on the Castle Medical Center campus," said Robert Walker, the hospital president.

He said the new facility, built with significant help from the Weinberg Foundation and other donors, will make it possible to add and expand programs. "It will be a terrific benefit to people in the Windward community, as well as everyone who receives treatment or works at Castle."

The building will house the Castle Wellness & Lifestyle Medicine Center, directed by Dr. John Westerdahl. It will include "The Health Source," a library with print, video and Internet access to health information, an expanded Healthy Cuisine Cooking Demonstration kitchen, Heartbeat Hawaii, an exercise and fitness classroom and an auditorium.

The opening will feature free cooking, aerobic and yoga demonstrations, blood pressure, glucose and heart health screenings, posture evaluations and a Teddy Bear Clinic.

>> Lily Yao is vice chairman of First Hawaiian Bank. A story on Page C2 Tuesday incorrectly said that her title was vice president.

>> Suzanne Funes is the ex-wife of the late Antonio "Tony" Funes, a retired Maui police detective. A Page A3 article on June 15 incorrectly listed her marital status and misspelled her first name.

>> The Raging Isle Summer Sprint, a one-mile swim from Sunset Beach to Pipeline, is Saturday. Another date was reported yesterday.

Man in black robs Kmart in Iwilei

A masked man, dressed in black and wielding a black tire iron, robbed Kmart Store in Iwilei about 6:05 a.m. today and fled with an unknown number of Hawaiian bracelets.

The robber headed straight for the jewelry department where he smashed a glass display case with a tire iron and took the bracelets, police said. A store employee confronted him but backed off, believing the robber was reaching for a gun in his front shirt pocket.

Police said the robber fled toward Nimitz Highway. Another employee gave chase but stopped when the robber turned around and pointed at what appeared to be a handgun at him.

The robber was described as 5-feet-8, about 150 pounds. He was wearing a black ski mask, black sweat pants, a black long-sleeve shirt and black gloves.

When patrol officers arrived, police said, the 38-year-old man was on the ground unconscious, and the other man was standing over him.

The victim was taken to Queen's with a broken nose and facial contusions. Police took the suspect to Castle Medical Center for treatment of some cuts to his hands before arresting him.
