Times shopper
scores $25,000

THE LONG DRIVE from Makakilo was well worth it for Reeve Ishii last Wednesday. Ishii joined four other lucky qualifiers at the Kahala Times Supermarket for a second chance drawing as part of the supermarket's "Quik Lotto Jackpot" game.

A dozen Vegas vacations and other smaller prizes had been awarded during the promotion, but weekly cash prizes had gone unclaimed. Times' solution: Give five shoppers a shot at $25,000.

With Times president Roger Godfrey and company executives looking on, the finalists were introduced to a crowd gathered near the market's deli. After being selected to pull the first envelope, Ishii stepped up and -- as if it were scripted out for him -- calmly announced to the crowd that he had in fact just won 25 grand.

"I was shocked," said Ishii after taking pictures with his winning check. He motioned to his mother, Caroline, saying that all her shopping at Times helped him get qualified. "I thought I was going to be going to Vegas," Ishii said.

Currently between jobs, Ishii remarked that the money will come in handy to pay off some bills and give back to his family. "I'm glad we came to Kahala today," he said. Now that's an understatement ...

BETTER BUST OUT those "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Bu" bumper stickers -- Bu La'ia has announced that he's a candidate for governor in 2002. That was the big "political announcement" made Friday night at the Hard Rock Cafe.

La'ia joined DJ Lukas and Soul Free to celebrate the China Uemura surf contest held last week. Four years have passed since his last run for governor, which was sidetracked after the "Hawaiian Superman" got arrested in Waikiki. Can't wait to see if Bu La'ia will "edumacate" the voting public this year and rally support like he once did ...

IT WAS QUITE a homecoming for The Rock on Saturday. World Wrestling Entertainment's "Tour of Defiance" certainly did not disappoint the Blaisdell's sold-out crowd, who showed up to smell what they were cooking.

Among those in attendance: KITV's Robert Kekaula, KPOI's Fil Slash, sumo great Konishiki and 102.7 Da Bomb's Sam the Man. Also, Bruce Willis sat ringside with The Rock's wife and mom. He even got to throw a shoulder at Chris Jericho during the main event. Pretty entertaining ...
