1969: Berne Hal-Mann finds
if the pants fit, wear ’em

IT began as a bet -- Kimo McVay wagered Berne Hal-Mann that the musician could not fit into Kimo's size-35 trousers. So right there near the entrance to Duke's, the two de-trousered, and Berne slipped neatly into Kimo's pants, pocketing 10 bucks in the process. (June 20, 1969) ... Back from an 11-day whirlwind swing through several mainland cities in search of a "Carmen" is Symphony maestro Robert LaMarchina. On his return, galfriend Stephanie Granger coyly inquired if he'd encountered any memorable companions on his trip. Only one, he replied, a 24-year-old beauty named Riley, now in Vancouver, B.C. He went on and on, telling how he loved to turn her on and get her engine to purring and how he planned to bring her to the islands so the family could see her. In case you haven't already guessed by now -- Riley is an antique car. (June 19, 1974) ...

TALK of the town's party circuit is the spectacular arrival staged by two fellows at Richard Smart's Diamond Head home the other night. The two arrived at the glittery affair by helicopter and -- armed with baskets of American Beauty roses -- were dropped off at Smart's tennis court. Only one problem. The two were uninvited guests and were staging the most smashing party-crashing of the season. Smart, unmoved and unimpressed, escorted the two to the door and gave them the heave-ho. So for the benefit of Diamond Head residents who were wondering why a chopper was flying so low to the ground the other night, that's the explanation. (June 22, 1976) ...

HYATT Regency food and beverage manager Wolf Lehmkuhl is gaining quite a reputation for staging spectacular banquets for various food and wine societies, but he may have outdone himself Saturday night. The Knights of the Dynasty were on hand to recall the gourmet travels of Marco Polo, so Lehmkuhl brought in jesters, minstrels, jugglers, sword-fighters and other bits of medieval entertainment to go with great silver platters piled high with such exotic cuisine as roasted peacock, broth of wild duck, stewed turtle, roasted ram, braised boar legs, honey pastries and tree cakes. Even the live peacocks that were on hand for decoration were impressed! (June 19, 1978) ...

PUNAHOU president Rod McPhee and wife Sharon are off next week for L.A. where they'll attend a big luau/reunion of Punahou alumni at the home of TV producer (and Punahou alum) Allan Burns of "Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Lou Grant" fame. There are more alumni of Punahou in California than any other state outside Hawaii, so they're expecting a large turnout. (June 18, 1982) ... Promoter Ken Rosene is going to great lengths to explain that rocker Ozzy Osbourne, who appears in concert tonight, is not brutal to animals. The incident of his biting a head off a dove occurred "a long time ago," says Rosene, and since then Ozzy has become a member of the SPCA and has contributed $2,000 to the N.Y. and L.A. societies. He no longer mistreats animals of any kind, says Rosene. (June 22, 1984) ...

SIGN of the Times: Know what General Railway, Nash Motors, Postum, Victor Talking Machines, Mack Trucks and Wright Aeronauticals have in common? They were all components of the Dow Jones Average. Says Paul Loo of Dean Witter Reynolds, "Who would have imagined in 1929 that 56 years later these companies would be replaced by McDonald's hamburgers?" (June 19, 1986) ...

MEGABUCKS businessman Chris Hemmeter, who's just built a multimillion-dollar pad on Kaikoo Drive, is putting his home up for sale. Rumored asking price is a cool $38 million. (June 19, 1989) ... Everyone at the Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was surprised when Crystal-Ray Aberegg was named the new Miss Hawaii. It wasn't that they thought the beauty shouldn't have won. It's just that they all know her at Kanoelani, the name she uses as a featured solo hula dancer in the Keith & Carmen Haugen show there. Even the Haugens were surprised. They'd never heard the name Crystal-Ray. (June 16, 1993) ...
