Wilton says deal
not done yet

UH's men's volleyball coach

have reached an agreement

Though contract negotiations are moving at "warp speed compared to previous years," it would be premature to say that the terms of the agreement have been reached, Warrior volleyball coach Mike Wilton said.

Wilton cannot speak specifically about his contract until it is finalized. The Board of Regents issued a directive that prohibits Wilton and athletics department officials from discussing the contract.

But he did say that negotiations were going well.

"We're having discussions with UH officials regarding contract renewal and restructuring," Wilton said yesterday. "It's very positive. Contrary to other published reports, it's not done."

Wilton's contract expires Aug. 15. In order for the regents to vote on the contract during their monthly meeting in July, the contract would need to be submitted to President Evan Dobelle by June 24. Should it not make the agenda for the July meeting, Wilton's contract would not be finalized until September because the regents do not convene in August. Either way, Wilton is pleased with the pace at which the discussions have moved.

The Warriors' coach has previously said that he would like a multi-year deal and a raise for long-time assistant coach Tino Reyes, who has four children. And Wilton would like to upgrade his son Aaron from part-time assistant to full-time status.

Last month, Wilton guided Hawaii to its first national championship, the only national title in any UH men's sport. He is the winningest coach in the program's history, with a record of 200-87. The Warriors have gone to three final fours in the last seven years. Hawaii also led the nation in attendance for the eighth consecutive year.
