losers bracketFormer Hawaii-Hilo standout Tanya Fuamatu teamed with ex-University of Hawaii outside hitter Heidi Ilustre to advance out of the "lucky losers" round during qualifying yesterday. Also advancing out of qualifying play were former UH player Dan Fisher, partnered with Matt Riley, and Punahou School product Scott Wong, with John Anselmo.
Other players with island ties who begin competing today are the men's top seed of Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong; Albert Hannemann, seeded fourth with Jeff Nygaard; Alika Williams, teaming with Scott Lane as the No. 16 seed; and Jason Ring, seeded 17th with Nick Hannemann.
In the women's division, Lia Young is seeded ninth with Gracie Santana-Baeni, and Danalee Bragado, seeded ninth with Monique Oliver.
Scott still alive: At Berlin, former University of Hawaii player Sean Scott and partner Todd Rogers split a pair of matches yesterday during the opening pool play of the $150,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour season opener.
Scott and Rogers defeated Max Backer and Gijis Ronnes of the Netherlands, 21-16, 21-14, then fell to Germany's Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann, 21-18, 19-21, 15-10.
Volunteers needed for AYSO National Games
The American Youth Soccer Organization National Games are being held here July 8-14 with 192 teams from around the nation, including Hawaii, participating.The organizing committee wants to recruit much-needed local volunteers.
