The Hawaii Island Movers opened their season last night by splitting a doubleheader with the San Mateo Bulldogs at Les Murakami Stadium.

Hawaii rebounded to win the second game 14-0 after losing the opener 5-3.

In the nightcap, the Movers jumped on San Mateo starter Mike Orlick for eight of the nine runs that crossed the plate in the bottom of the second inning. The Movers had seven hits and took advantage of two walks, two hit batters, two wild pitches and a throwing error.

The key hits in the inning came from future Rainbow Matt Inouye, who hit a two-run single to left; Drew Jackson, who signed with Hawaii early and brought in two more runs with a triple to left-center field on a two-strike pitch; and Blaine Umeda (University of San Francisco), who closed out the scoring with a two-run single to right.

The Movers picked up another run in the third when second baseman Isaac Omura, also a UH recruit, doubled home Brad Takamori (Loyola Marymount), who had walked with one out.

In the meantime, right-hander Keahi Rawlins, who has signed with UH and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, did not give up a hit until there were two out in the fifth. Frank Torres sent a soft liner to right to end Rawlins' hitless effort and end a string of 12 consecutive batters retired.

Rawlins walked one and fanned six. The only other runner to reach base against the Molokai High School graduate came on a first inning, two-out walk.

"Early in the game I didn't feel too good," Rawlins said. "My arm was a little tight. It loosened up after the first inning and I had good command. I think I was hitting my spots and moving the ball in and out."

In the first game, the Bulldogs broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning when Mike Mooney walked, took second on a wild pitch by the Movers' second pitcher, Peter Phillips, moved to third on a groundout and scored when Jacob Fuata punched a single to left through the drawn-in infield.

The Movers took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Bulldogs responded with three runs in the top of the third off starter Richard Olsen. A single by Stefan Foushee, a walk to Dave Figoni, a wild pitch and Scott Kirby's two-run single to right put the visitors ahead. Mooney followed with a triple to the right-center field alley scoring Kirby.

Hawaii tied the score in the fourth when Clint Copulus walked, stole second and scored on Travis Hayashida's triple that eluded a diving attempt by Kirby in medium deep right field.

Chris Herrera pitched a complete game for San Mateo allowing six hits. He walked three and fanned two.

The teams play another doubleheader today starting at 5 p.m.
