Tyson shows softer side
after taking beating in ring

COULD it be that Mike Tyson, who's made a career out of being a criminal hooligan, is mellowing? Even before he was battered into submission by champ Lennox Lewis, a table-turning event for Tyson, he agreed to giving dressing room access to photog Neil Leifer of Sports Illustrated. Leifer's shots, include some of Tyson beaten but unbowed, playing with his baby after the fight, will be in the coming issue of the magazine ... And when Tyson was in Hawaii, ostensibly training for the match, he and an entourage visited Pipeline Cafe on three successive evenings and were very well behaved. Iron Mike even gave the bartender a $100 bill each night as a way of saying "Thanks." Could it be? ...

ONE guy who had a vicious reputation is now flying heroic colors and it suits him. We're referring to Dwayne Johnson, who was spotted working out at 24 Hour Fitness on Kapiolani Sunday night, and was quite cordial with everyone who spoke to him. Johnson is now an actor who seems to have box office appeal, but most people know him as "The Rock," of wrestling fame. The Rock, who grew up in Hawaii and went to McKinley, hopes to show he still has it at the upcoming wrestling card promoter Tom Moffatt has put together, and which sold out faster than any event in Blaisdell Arena history ...

Fully committed

THINGS were hopping at Lahaina's popular Pacific 'O restaurant at the height of dinner service the other night when one Louis Coulombe showed up with a party of eight. They found it "fully committed," just as the fictitious restaurant in the comedy which recently played at the Arts at Mark's Garage. The group wasn't too eager to go across the way to I'o, Pacific 'O's sister restaurant but did, and according to all reports had a fabulous dinner. Oh, did I mention that Coulombe is the owner of both restaurants? ...

WORK is under way to present Roosevelt High grad Yvonne Elliman in concert this fall. She's best known for being the original "Mary Magdalene" on the record and early productions of "Jesus Christ Superstar," and for her disco hit "If I Can't Have You" ...

Big Apple or small world?

LOCAL publicist Lisa Josephsohn reports 17-year old pal Christy Rumbaugh had three call-backs for the new "Flower Drum Song" starring Lea Salonga, with book by David Hwang, before she was finally judged to be too young for the part of Linda. The two attended the Tony Awards together and as they walked into Radio City Music Hall they ran into Jesse Michael Mothershed, who'd been in "Oliver" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" at Diamond Head Theatre. After the show, Josephsohn and Rumbaugh walked out and ran into Lisa's pal Jolie Gabler, who worked as an assistant to magic man David Copperfield at his Blaisdell appearance. Small world indeed ...
