Carter hands out another
assist for UH basketball

Calling it a "small donation to get things started," former Hawaii basketball guard Anthony Carter presented a check for $100,000 during yesterday's reception at the Stan Sheriff Center.

"I won't ever forget where I came from," said Carter, who played for the Rainbows from 1996-98. "I want to do whatever it takes to help."

The check is to establish the Anthony "AC" Carter Endowed Scholarship Fund that will benefit the men's basketball program. Carter recently finished his third season with the NBA's Miami Heat.

"AC Carter is setting an example for UH's young alumni," said Betsy Sloane, president of the University of Hawaii Foundation. "One could look at his success and think that for him it's easy to make a difference.

"But this gift shows that he knows that without his time at UH, he would not have had the opportunities he did. He worked hard to make the most of those opportunities, and his gift will ensure others can have the same chance."

Takata takes silver in Mexico City judo tourney

Iolani School graduate Taylor Takata won a silver medal at last weekend's Benito Juarez Judo Championships in Mexico City.

Takata, who is living at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado, competed in the 60-kilogram weight class. He was also a member of the U.S. men's team that won the team gold.

Kaneohe Yacht Club hosts 49er Championships

More than 80 sailors representing 19 countries will compete in the 49er World Championship, an Olympic qualifier event, beginning Sunday on Kaneohe Bay.

Kaneohe Yacht Club is hosting the event, one of several qualifiers for the 2004 Games in Athens.

Among the Olympic hopefuls are Americans Jonathan and Charlie McKee, the bronze medalists at the 2000 Games, and top-ranked Rodion Luca and Georgiy Leonchuk of Ukraine.

The first practice race is Sunday with the qualifying races June 17-19.

Bacalsco, Choi take over Town and Country

The Town and Country State Championship was completed Sunday at Ala Moana Bowls.

Standouts included Kekoa Bacalsco of Mililani, who took the junior men's division while posting some of the highest scores of the day.

"At low tide this place is tricky, some of the sections are hard to make, so I just waited for the ones that went through," said Bacalsco. "I haven't won in a long time so this feels good."

Honolulu's Billy Choi slashed his way to two titles, the hotly contested airshow division and the open men's division.

"I think the meditation and training I've been doing really helped me. In the airshow, the smaller kids were ripping but a 360 I did in the inside I think was the determining factor," Choi said.

Choi, Bacalsco and other finalists qualified for the National Championship, July 20-26, in Oceanside, Calif.

Paddleboard race drawing interest abroad

Overwhelming international interest in the sixth annual 32-mile Quiksilver edition Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race has forced organizers to limit the field to a record 80 competitors this summer.

"It's incredible the amount of international interest that this race has generated," says Mike Takahashi, race director and participant.

"We have six-time French lifesaving champion Thierry Krawiec coming over, as well as Japanese lifesaving champion Taku Araki, the finest distance paddlers from Australia, and the top west-coast paddlers."

Australia lays claim to both the defending champion, Aaron Bitmead, and the race record holder, Mick Dibetta, who set a fierce pace in 1997's inaugural race with a finish of 5 hours, 22 minutes and 48 seconds.

The race will start at 7:30 a.m. at Papohaku Homestead, Molokai, and finish at Maunalua Bay, Hawaii Kai, at approximately 12:30 p.m., July 28.
