Williams Ks 10 over
7 shutout innings

Associated Press

FRESNO, Calif. >> Waipahu alumnus Jerome Williams pitched seven shutout innings, striking out 10, to lead Fresno to a 1-0 victory over Tucson yesterday.

Williams, who got a no-decision for his best game of the season, gave up six hits and walked two. The 20-year-old pitcher, the youngest in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, is 3-5. In his last four games before yesterday, he had a 1.90 ERA.

Grizzlies reliever Jeff Verplancke picked up the win after pitching one hitless inning. And Manny Aybar, who had blown two saves against the Sidewinders previously, picked up his 15th save.

The game was scoreless until the eighth inning, when Grizzlies pinch hitter Angel Pena drove in Marco Pernalete, who had tripled. The Grizzlies stranded runners on third base three times; the Sidewinders left runners on third twice.
