The Nebraska senior and Kalani alumnus became just the sixth pitcher in collegiate history to notch 40 career wins and 500 strikeouts as the Cornhuskers beat Richmond 2-0 yesterday in the opening game of the NCAA super regionals, leaving Nebraska just one win away from the College World Series.
"Right now we've gotten a step closer. We haven't done anything yet," said Komine (9-0), who allowed just four hits and struck out six.
Komine, a Kalani High School graduate from Honolulu, improved to 20-0 at home. His next start would be in the opening round of the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha if the Huskers win the best-of-three series.
"I want another chance to pitch and I think everybody else wants the chance to play again after this weekend. It couldn't end on a better note if we come out tomorrow and do what we have to do," said Komine, who was drafted in the ninth round by the Oakland A's on Tuesday.
Komine's six strikeouts left him with exactly 500. Among the others in the 40-500 club is former Aiea and Hawaii pitcher Derek Tatsuno.
