Dobelle hopes to have the
position filled by the end of JulyBy Dave Reardon
dreardon@starbulletin.comThe committee hopes to present three to five unranked finalists by the end of this month to Manoa interim chancellor Deane Neubauer. President Evan Dobelle will make the final selection, with approval by the UH Board of Regents. Dobelle wants to have a replacement for the retiring Hugh Yoshida in place by the end of July.
"We'll be taking a look (today) at a number of people, spending our time on the ones who appear to be more qualified than the others," committee chairman David McClain said. "I can say it's in the double-digit range."
McClain said the committee will not conduct personal interviews; that will be done after the finalists are chosen.
Also, the committee is not releasing any information regarding candidates, but several have publicly expressed their interest.
Former UH football player and current associate athletics director Jim Donovan, and former UH player, assistant football coach and broadcaster and current TV executive Rick Blangiardi are known to have applied.
Dick Tomey is considered a contender for the post, but the former UH and Arizona football coach said he is also interested in possibly restarting his coaching career or continuing in broadcasting (he did color for Warrior football telecasts last fall).
Others who have been mentioned as possible candidates include UC Riverside athletics director Stan Morrison, UCLA associate athletics director Betsy Peterson, UC Santa Barbara athletics director Gary Cunningham, Wyoming athletics director Lee Moon, former UH administrator Rockne Freitas, former UH football coach Bob Wagner and Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson.
