The Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin Index is a price-weighted index designed to measure the performance of Hawaii-based companies. The index was developed with a base value of 100 as of December 31, 1999. A chart of the index which shows the weekly performance of its members is published weekly in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Hawaii's banking stocks, among the best performers in the state this year, gave back some of their gains this week as the Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin index suffered a 4.2 percent decline. Banking stocks lose steam
Central Pacific Bank parent CPB Inc., the top gainer this year with a 31.3 percent advance, was the biggest loser this week at its stock tumbled 9.5 percent. City Bank parent CB Bancshares Inc., up 19.9 percent in 2002, dropped 0.6 percent. Bank of Hawaii Corp., ahead 10.4 percent this year, fell 1.3 percent. And American Savings Bank parent Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc., ahead 4.9 percent in 2002, dropped 7.3 percent.
Aquasearch Inc. had the best gain as its stock jumped 16.7 percent to 7 cents -- a 1 cent gain for the week. Hawaiian Airlines Inc., up 1.2 percent and Maui Land & Pineapple Inc., ahead 1.1 percent, were the only other Hawaii companies to post a gain of at least 1 percent.
