Grace Pacific buys Kauai construction company
Grace Pacific Corp. has announced it will purchase Kauai-based Niu Construction Inc. for an undisclosed price.The company said the purchase is expected to be completed in two months.
The purchase of Niu Construction, founded in 1985 as a general contractor and asphalt paving company, will strengthen Grace Pacific's position on Kauai, the company said. The agreement will allow for Niu Construction to continue operations under its own name. Grace Pacific said it intends to retain all the Niu employees. Grace Pacific employs 300 in operations on Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.
Creditors sue local HUD manufacturer
Three creditors of Hawaiian Palisade Homes Inc. have gone to court to force the builder of pre-fabricated homes to cease operations.Attorneys for Pacific Building Materials, Valve Service & Supply Inc. and Acoustical Material Services of Hawaii Inc. have filed a Chapter 7 liquidation petition in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in order to recover more than a collective $280,000 they claim they are owed. Pacific Building Materials is seeking $110,530.59, Valve Service & Supply, $102,452; and Acoustical Material Services of Hawaii, $67,759.60.
At its Kapolei factory, Hawaiian Palisade Homes manufactures U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development certified homes.
Hawaiian Palisade executives did not return calls. The company has until June 26 to submit to bankruptcy court a motion or answer to the petition.
Las Vegas casino unions approve contract
Las Vegas >> Las Vegas union members for five of the largest casino companies approved a five-year contract, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The plan was approved Thursday by 98 percent of those who voted, the paper said, citing Glen Arnodo, political director of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226. The contract covers about 38,000 members of the Culinary Union and Bartenders Local 165.The agreement will cost MGM Mirage, Mandalay Resort Group, Park Place Entertainment Corp., Harrah's Entertainment Inc. and Aztar Corp. an additional $650 million in labor costs over the next five years, the paper said.
Union officials are still negotiating with 16 smaller Las Vegas casinos for new contracts. The union last week extended a strike deadline for the smaller casinos until June 30.
