It was telescope cleaning day atop the Big Island's Mauna Kea yesterday. After using watering cans to rinse the Gemini Observatory's North 26.7-foot mirror, technicians washed it using natural sponges and horse soap, above.

As the mirror was washed, the yellow mirror lifter stood poised to hoist the 24-ton lens back up to the telescope five-stories above.

Mele French ran through a series of poles yesterday in an agility drill during practice at Kapiolani Park. She and other girls who are part of the all-star Honolulu Bulls Soccer Club will represent the state in the Far Western Regional Soccer Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 23-30.
