murdering 2 men in Puna DistrictBy Rod Thompson
rthompson@starbulletin.comKyle Zengy Thurston Hill, 19, of no permanent address, was charged yesterday with first-degree murder, involving the deaths of two victims in one crime, two counts of second-degree murder, for each of the individual killings, and use of a firearm in a felony.
The charges were the same as those filed Sunday against 18-year-old John McGovern.
McGovern also faces marijuana and auto theft charges. Both men are being held without bail.
Last week, police acting with the help of the victims' families found the bodies of Cassidy Toole and Wesley Alan Matheson, both 20, in Fern Acres subdivision south of Hilo.
The sparsely inhabited area is the same community where the victims were caretakers of an estate, according to Matheson's friend Glenn Gregory.
Police initially listed the victims as missing persons, saying they were last seen 40 miles from their home on May 8. Big Island police originally said the men were picked up by a red sedan in the Kau district after their car became stuck in a ditch along Mamalahoa Highway.
A police report this week said the victims were killed May 6, and police issued a partial correction yesterday, saying Toole was not one of the persons seen on May 8. Police gave no further explanation.
A police report said McGovern confessed to shooting both men in the head. No information was available on any statements by Hill.
