Island Soap & Candle orders recall of product

Island Soap & Candle Works of Honolulu is recalling about 29,000 candles that may be fire hazards.

The candles, with wicks that can fall off and re-ignite after the flame had gone out, were sold in stores in Hawaii and Monterey, Calif., from April 2000 through April 8 this year. The recall resulted from one report of a fire that caused minor property and smoke damage.

The candles are in brown coconut shells. Some candles have moon and star cutouts around the upper rim of the coconut shell. They range in various sizes and 20 different scents.

Consumers should stop using the candles immediately and return them to the store for a full refund. The candles also can be mailed to the company at 900 Fort Street Mall, Suite 1220, Honolulu 96813 for a refund. For more information, call the company at 535-5566.

Hawaii Kai to house a new satellite city hall

In late September, East Honolulu will have its own satellite city hall, replacing the mobile satellite bus that visits Hawaii Kai three times a week.

The permanent office will be in the Hawaii Kai Corporate Plaza behind Roy's Restaurant at Kalanianaole Highway and Keahole Street. It will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MJ Construction will begin the build-out of the 1,800-square-foot office space later this month. The project cost is estimated at $196,000.

With four customer service windows, the new office will be able to handle motor vehicle transactions, as well as picnic and camping permits and bus passes.

Missouri Memorial opens 1 hour earlier

The Battleship Missouri Memorial will have new hours until June 30.

The memorial will now open at 8 a.m. rather than 9 a.m. daily.

The memorial will continue to close at 5 p.m. daily.

The extension is "to enable more visitors to take advantage of the Pearl Harbor experience," said Don Hess, president and chief operating officer of the battleship.

General admission to the battleship is $14 for adults and $7 for children 4 to 12 years old.

For more information, call 973-2495.

IRS has new tax-dispute numbers

The Internal Revenue Service has new phone numbers in Hawaii for taxpayers to set up appointments to resolve tax problems.

The number in Honolulu is 539-2099. On the Big Island, call 933-6983 and on Maui the number is 242-4493.

To make an appointment, the taxpayer can call the local number and, at the prompt, leave a message requesting Everyday Tax Solutions help, according to the IRS. A representative will call back within two business days to schedule an appointment at the taxpayer's convenience.

Taxpayers can also walk in during regular business hours.

Many situations do not require a face-to-face meeting, according to the IRS. To discuss a problem by phone or letter, taxpayers should call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or write to the address on their IRS correspondence. Information is also available at www.irs.gov.

>> Both Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. reported sales declined last month. A headline on page C4 yesterday incorrectly said the companies reported sales increased.

Boy's wheelchair stolen from Kalihi Kai School

An 11-year-old boy with muscular dystrophy is asking for the return of his motorized wheelchair that was stolen outside a classroom yesterday.

Clyde Igarashi, vice principal at Kalihi Kai School, said that because the classrooms were crowded, the fifth-grader had to leave the wheelchair outside and enter the room using a walker.

The wheelchair was stolen from the sidewalk on McNeil Street about 11 a.m., he said.

"Some students said they saw a woman walk off with it," Igarashi said.

The chair cost $5,200, and the boy's family cannot afford to buy another one, said Andi Kubota, care coordination manager at Shriners Hospital where the boy has been a patient since 1996. He received the chair in October.

The boy is using a loan chair which is not motorized. Anyone with information is asked to call Kalihi police at 842-7737.
