as top 2 seeds, Wie makes cutWie qualified for the prestigious local tournament for a second consecutive year, finishing yesterday's qualifying round with a respectable 74. She is the 46th of 64 seeded players who teed it up this morning and will face 19th seed Sam Oishi, who qualified with a 71.
Kop tied for low round with Junior Agpaoa with a 4-under-par 67. The former University of Hawaii golfer has won the Manoa Cup four times; the latest in 1998.
There will be 16 golfers left after today's first- and second-round matches. Other top local golfers who shot under par were Damien Victorino (69), Jonathan Ota (69), Kellen-Floyd Asao (70) and Norman-Ganin Asao (70).
Honolulu Fit holding training sessions
Honolulu Fit is hosting its fifth marathon training program, a 26-week program to help runners prepare for the Dec. 8 Honolulu Marathon.The cost is $120 for new members and $95 for returning members. Registration is scheduled for 8 a.m. on June 22 and June 29 across from the Ohana Hobron Hotel in Waikiki.
BYUH teams No. 1 in Division II tennis poll
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's and men's tennis teams finished atop the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings for NCAA Division II released yesterday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.BYUH became the first school to win both the Division II men's and women's national championships in the same year.
The Hawaii Pacific (20-5) men's team finished No. 5 with the HPU women (10-8) No. 12.
A's pick Komine in ninth round
Shane Komine, a right-hander from Kalani High School in his senior season at Nebraska, was the first player selected from Hawaii.Komine was picked in the ninth round by the Oakland Athletics.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound ace is undefeated at 8-0 with a 1.93 earned run average. He leads the team in strikeouts with 99 and has given up just 49 hits in 79 1/3 innings.
Komine was a 19th round pick by St. Louis last year.
