"Bad Company" >> This is another movie with a release date that was pushed back due to Sept. 11 events. The plot hinges on a band of terrorists armed with a nuclear suitcase bomb in New York City, and it stars Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins as the unlikely duo who take on the terrorists. Rock plays a fast-talking con man who gets by scalping New York Knicks tickets. His suave twin brother, however, is a CIA operative, and when the brother gets killed just before completing a top-secret mission to keep said bomb off the black market, Rock's hustler must take a crash course in the ways of the CIA from his brother's veteran partner, played by Hopkins (PG-13).
"The Debut" >> This independent Filipino-American film hopes to follow up on the favorable response it received as last year's Hawai'i International Film Festival's Audience Award winner for Best Feature. A young, "whitewashed" Filipino artist is reacquainted with his culture while dealing with both a tradition-minded father and an infatuation with a white classmate (NR).
"Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" >> "Thelma & Louise" screenwriter Callie Khouri makes her directorial debut in this adaptation of Rebecca Wells' best-selling novel about a New York-based playwright (Sandra Bullock) whose troubled relationship with her Southern mother (Ellen Burstyn) rallies her mother's friends (Maggie Smith, Fionnula Flanagan and Shirley Knight) to stage an unorthodox intervention before the playwright's wedding in helping to unravel the truth about the eccentric woman and find forgiveness (PG-13).
