Big Island police charged one man with murdering two men who disappeared in early May and arrested another man in the same case.

Police charged 18-year-old John McGovern last night with first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and promoting detrimental drugs.

McGovern was being held without bail at the Hilo police cellblock pending arraignment in Hilo District Court.

Kona police arrested the second suspect, a 19-year-old man, on second-degree murder charges yesterday afternoon. He was held at the Hilo cellblock pending investigation.

Decomposing bodies that police believe are those of Cassidy Toole and Wesley Alan Matheson, both 20, were found in a shallow grave in the Fern Acres subdivision south of Hilo on Thursday.

Both victims had been shot in the head, according to a preliminary autopsy report.

Roommates who lived in Fern Acres, Toole and Matheson were last seen alive on May 8 getting into a red sedan in the Kau district after their car got stuck in a ditch along Mamalahoa Highway about 56 miles from Fern Acres.

Police questioned McGovern on May 16 and released him before arresting and charging him yesterday.
