Hawaii a candidate
for New York tourney

Star-Bulletin staff

Riley Wallace shot a 99 yesterday at the Maui Open pro-am in Makena.

Next year, the Hawaii basketball coach hopes to have his team shooting in Madison Square Garden.

"We'd go if we were asked," Wallace said yesterday.

Feelers apparently have gone out regarding a trip to New York for the Rainbows in November 2003. A four-team tournament would include Hawaii and three New York-area schools.

Just as with the proposed ESPN Bracket Busters Saturday, discussions concerning the New York games are "very preliminary," said associate head coach Bob Nash.

The New York event might be held in conjunction with an island tourism expo, although an official from the Hawaii Tourism Authority said yesterday that the organization has not been contacted. The HTA calendar for 2003 has not been set.

The Gazelle Group, which runs the Coaches vs. Cancer event at The Garden, has its annual showcase scheduled for mid-November. An official from Gazelle Group said yesterday that no other men's basketball tournament so far has been scheduled at The Garden.
