falls into third place

Star-Bulletin staff

The ninth-ranked Hawaii sailing team dropped to third place after the second day of competition in the 2002 Intercollegiate Sailing Association women's championship.

Old Dominion continues to lead the three-day championship at Keehi Lagoon with 105 points. After 14 races, the Monarchs took control yesterday with the lowest point totals in both the A and B divisions. St. Mary's moved into second with 142 points. The Seahawks used four solid finishes by its B division crew in races 10-13 to sneak past the Wahine. The defending national champions are in third with 146 points. Only two points separate fourth-place Brown (174) and Yale (176).

The All-American tandem of Molly O'Bryan and Sarah Hitchcock were solid again, finishing second in the A division and trailing only Old Dominion's top team by 14 points.

Today is the last day of the women's championship. The first of today's final six races starts at 9:45 a.m.

UH softball schedule includes top opponents

The 2003 Hawaii softball schedule includes at least six possible opponents that made it to this year's regionals.

The schedule includes six tournaments before Western Athletic Conference play begins April 5 against league champion Fresno State.

The Wahine open the season by hosting the Chevron Paradise Classic, which begins Feb. 6. Other tournaments at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium are the Chevron Malihini Tournament and the Chevron Invitational -- which includes regional participants Pacific, Ohio State and Wisconsin.

UH will travel to UNLV, Cal State Fullerton and North Carolina for tournaments.

The WAC regular season concludes at Louisiana Tech May 10-11 and NCAA regionals run from May 14-18 with the College World Series the following week.

Seasiders add transfer from BYU-Provo

Shawn Opumui will transfer to play basketball at Brigham Young-Hawaii in the fall.

The 5-foot-11 point guard, a Lahaina native, is transferring from BYU-Provo. He played just four games for the Cougars last season before injuring his thumb. He was awarded a medical redshirt so he will begin his career at BYUH as a freshman in eligibility.

"We are excited about having Shawn come here," Seasiders coach Ken Wagner said. "He has a passion, a real love, for basketball. His athleticism and his passing skills will really add to the team."
