Saturday cooking classes

You're never too old for summer school.

Kapiolani Community College is offering Saturday cooking classes in June and July for those who'd like to brush up on their skills -- or perhaps develop some.

The hands-on classes run 8 a.m. to noon. Call 734-9211, preferably three weeks in advance.

Cooking Basics Series

Taught by Grant Sato in 'Ohi'a Room 109:

Cooking with Lamb and Pork: Make rack and leg-of-lamb, pork loin with sage and pork chops; June 8, $40.
The Butter Sauces: Focus on hollandaise, béarnaise and various beurre blanc sauces; June 15, $35.
Cooking with Beef: Learn how to cut and work with beef to make Veal Scaloppine, Tournedos Béarnaise and Beef Stroganoff; June 22, $35.
Cooking with Duck and Chicken: Make classic Coq au Vin and a sauté of chicken with apples; July 6, $40.
Hors d'oeuvres: Prepare canapés, dips, rolls and tapenades; July 13, $35.
Mousse, Paté and Terrines: Learn to make these dinner-party specialties; July 20, $35.

Baking Basics Series

Taught by Daniel Wetter in the 'Ohelo bakeshop:

Yeast Breads: June 22, $35.
Quick Breads: June 29, $35.

Prepare to Taste

The annual Taste of Honolulu eating extravaganza will take place June 28 to 30. That's several weeks away, but if you want to start revving up your appetite, pre-sale scrip is available through June 7.

Pre-sale packages offer a discount: $25 worth of scrip for $21 or $50 worth of scrip plus two admission tickets for $44.

Taste of Honolulu is a fund-raiser for Easter Seals Hawaii. The event will be held on the Honolulu Civic Center grounds. Admission is $3.

Vegetarian cooking

Indian vegetarian dishes are on the menu at a free cooking demonstration Saturday at Down to Earth Lifestyle Center.

Learn to make Royal Rice, Samosas, Tomato Chutney, Semolina Halvah, Palak Tofu Paneer and Mithi Lassi.

Class begins at 2 p.m. Call 949-0298.
