Festival royalty named
Two high school students, an electrician supervisor and a professional beauty consultant have been selected to serve on the Aloha Festivals' Oahu royal court.Barney Kapono Isaacs of Waianae, Helen Mealoha Yuk Jun Kuoha-Torco of Kailua, Justin Kawaikapuonalani Kalilimoku of Nuuanu and Jamie Hinahinakukahakai Ernestberg of Kailua will reign over the 56th Annual Aloha Festivals.
King Isaacs is a city line electrician supervisor. Queen Kuoha-Torco is a self-employed beauty consultant and retired Windward Community College professor. Prince Kalilimoku is a Roosevelt High School junior, and Princess Ernestberg is a Kalaheo sophomore.
They were chosen for their knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture, dedication to the community and ability to appropriately represent the celebration.
The appointees are volunteers of Hawaiian descent who will be trained to represent the alii of 18th- and 19th-century Hawaii.
All will be given symbols of Hawaiian royalty in an Aug. 8 ceremony at City Hall.
Kauai, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and the island of Hawaii each have their own royal courts comprising local residents.
This year's Aloha Festivals theme, "Ka 'Uhane o Ka Loea (The Spirit of the Master)," acknowledges artists' contributions to preserving Hawaii's cultural heritage.

Raise swords for Xena!
OK, all you women warriors, bust out the breastplates and leather skirts and head over to the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics June 9 for Xenafest.Television's amazing Amazon is the inspiration for the event hosted by the Xenites Hawaii Club, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Geophysics 110, with special guest actor Robert Trebor (Salmoneus) of "Hercules" and "Xena: Warrior Princess" fame. He also played Son of Sam David Berkowitz in the 1985 movie "Out of Darkness."
There will also be costume, battle cry and trivia contests, martial arts demonstrations, food and door prizes.

Pan-Pacific Fest set
Mark your calendar for the Pan-Pacific Festival -- Matsuri in Hawaii, set to run June 7 to 9.The 23rd annual celebration will feature more than 3,000 musicians, artists and dancers from Japan, promoting intercultural friendship.
Highlights are:
>> June 7: The Pan-Pacific Ho'olaule'a on Kalakaua Avenue, featuring entertainers from Hawaii and Japan, with an outdoor marketplace of international foods; 6:10 to 10 p.m.
>> June 9: Pan-Pacific Matsuri Parade down Kalakaua Avenue, 5 to 7 p.m., followed by the Matsuri Moonlight Finale in Kapiolani Park. Featured will be a bon dance; Korean, Japanese and Hawaiian performances; and a full-moon concert.
