"Na Olelo No'eau No Na Keiki," by Kimo Armitage and Lilia Wahinemaika'i Hale, illustrated by Solomon Enos (Island Heritage, $8.99)

A bit more directed at the Hawaiian student than the usual impulse-tourist-buy of many of IH's titles, Armitage and Hale have taken Western aphorisms such as "If you want a job done correctly, do it yourself" and translated to a Hawaiian equivalent, such as "A'ole pono ke ha'awi aku i ka hana i ka moloa (It is not right to give work to a lazy person)." Enos' illustrations are 1930s mural-like.

"The University of Hawaii-Hilo -- A College in the Making," edited by Frank T. Inouye and Edward J. Kormondy (University of Hawaii Press, $15)

This collection of essays and recollections by former officials at the "other" University of Hawaii is actually more entertaining than the usual canned corporate self-eulogy, as each writer brings his own periscope to bear on the events of the day. Inouye, the school's first director, conceived the project as an ongoing process, and the work was continued by former Chancellor Kormondy when Inouye died in 1995. A useful backgrounder on the history of Hawaii higher education.
