Yokozuna Musashimaru
wins 11th Emperor’s Cup

TOKYO (AP) - Yokozuna Musashimaru forced out ozeki Tochiazuma on Saturday to capture his 11th Emperor's Cup on the second to last day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Fighting in the day's final bout at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Musashimaru used a powerful right-arm thrust to knock Tochiazuma off balance and then finished his opponent off with one final shove to improve to 13-1 in the 15-day tourney. Tochiazuma dropped to 9-5.

With the victory, Musashimaru joins fellow Hawaiian yokuzuna Akebono for seventh in career wins.

"I just decided to go at him with my right hand and then take it from there," said Musashimaru. "I didn't change my strategy even after yesterday's loss."

Musashimaru, who won the spring tourney as well, lost to ozeki Chiyotaikai on Friday.

In other major bouts, Chiyotaikai wasted little energy in driving out Takamisakari to improve to 11-3 while handing the No. 6 maegashira his sixth loss.

Chiyotaikai watched his title hopes vanish with Musashimaru's win but it was still a successful tourney for the burly ozeki, who needed a winning record to avoid demotion for the next tournament after a sub-par 7-8 showing in the spring tournament.

In a battle of Mongolian grapplers, sekiwake Asashoryu prevailed over Kyokutenho when the No. 4 maegashira slipped up after the face off and fell to his eighth loss.

Asashoryu improved to 10-4 and has a good chance of being promoted to ozeki - sumo's second highest rank - for the next tournament. He would become the first Mongolian to achieve ozeki status.

Fellow Mongolian Kyokushuzan, a tenth-ranked maegashira, deployed an impressive arm throw to defeat No. 12 maegashira Hamanishiki and pick up his 10th win. Hamanishiki dropped to 6-8.
