Bill von Arnswaldt announced his retirement as Kaiser athletic director yesterday, citing his wife's health as a primary reason for his departure. Von Arnswaldt retires
from KaiserVon Arnswaldt, Kaiser's athletic director for the last six years, will move to Las Vegas where he and his wife, Patricia, own a home. Patricia has already moved and von Arnswaldt will join her in July.
"Her asthma was getting pretty bad so it was recommended that she find a desert climate," von Arnswaldt said.
"I wasn't planning on retiring so early, but it's one of those things and we'll ride it out."
Von Arnswaldt said Bryan Almadova, Kaiser's assistant AD and varsity boys basketball coach, will serve as interim athletic director until the school's administration names a permanent successor.
Von Arnswaldt, a Kamehameha graduate, has been a fixture at Kaiser since the school's infancy. He started as varsity track and field coach in 1972, a year after the school opened. He spent 15 years as track coach and was the varsity football head coach from 1981-84. He also coached wrestling, golf, soccer and powerlifting during his tenure.
He was promoted to athletic director in 1996 and took over as the paddling coordinator for the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Hawaii High School Athletic Association.
"I was very glad to have the opportunity to be at Kaiser and watch it develop into a very good school academically as well as athletically," von Arnswaldt said.
Von Arnswaldt said he will consider continuing his career in education.
"Everything's up in the air right now," he said. "I don't mind looking into the school system there because I feel I still have a number of good years left, either teaching or getting back into the athletic side of it."
