Mid-Pacific catcher Matt Inouye has been named the Gatorade State High School Baseball Player of the Year.

Inouye, a senior, hit .433 with nine doubles, three triples and three home runs this season and led the Owls to the state championship last week.

Inouye has already signed a letter of intent to join the University of Hawaii baseball program next season.

Inouye is among the seniors scheduled to play in Monday's Kado Gloves Sugar Mill Classic at Hans L'Orange Field.

The fourth annual all-star game features standouts from the OIA taking on the best from the ILH. The rosters will also include several players from the neighbor islands.

The game starts at 1 p.m.

Three months and counting: Good news for those going through prep sports withdrawal, the OIA has released its preliminary football schedule.

The final dates and sites have yet to be finalized, but the matchups are set as the league will unveil its new alignment when the regular season opens Aug. 30.

The Red Conference has been expanded from 10 to 14 teams and will be split into two geographic divisions. Making up the Red West are Waianae, Mililani, Campbell, Aiea, Waipahu, Leilehua and Radford. Teams in the Red East are Kahuku, Castle, Kailua, McKinley, Roosevelt, Kalaheo and Farrington.

The opening weekend is reserved for crossover games between the divisions.

The White Conference is made of Kaimuki, Nanakuli, Kaiser, Pearl City, Moanalua, Waialua, Kalani and Kapolei.

The top five teams in the Red East and West and the top two from the White qualify for the OIA playoffs.

Preseason games start Aug. 23. All of the games scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 20-21 will be played that Friday so teams can attend the doubleheader pitting St. Louis and Kahuku against De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) and Poly (Long Beach) the following night.

Jamboree rosters set: Eight former college players will join forces with current high school players for tomorrow's Mufi Hannemann Basketball Jamboree at Iolani Gym.

The ninth annual event tips off at 8:30 a.m. with youth league contests. The high school games start at 11:30. The championship is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

Admission is free. Donations will benefit the Gender Equity Sports Club.
