Side Street hits decade mark
Side Street Inn is just a block west of Ala Moana Center, but light years removed from any sense of designer fashion. This unassuming, nondescript bar and grill serves up plate lunches by day, fried rice and pork chops by night, liquor whenever it's legal, sports on TV at all hours and karaoke most of the time, too.
No frills, certainly no white tablecloths, but for 10 years Side Street has provided some of the best basic, hearty food in town. The islands' most accomplished chefs hang out there after their own restaurants close, drawn by the generous, family-style plates and owner Colin Nishida's fellowship (and generosity with the vodka shots).
Nishida is celebrating Side Street's 10th anniversary with a street party Sunday, a benefit for Shriners Hospital and Malama Na Keiki. Hopaka Street from Pensacola to Piikoi will be closed for the noon to 5 p.m. celebration. Food and drink will be traded for scrip at booths along the street.
In true Side Street fashion, though, it won't be ordinary food. Nishida's friends and loyal customers will be serving plates, most for $2 to $6. They include Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi, plus chefs from 3660 On the Rise, Chai's Island Bistro, Chart House, Creations in Catering, Hapuna Prince Hotel, L'Uraku, Nori's, Plaza Club, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar and Tokkuri-Tei.
Beer and wine will be sold, and if it gets hot outside, you can pop into Side Street to eat in the air-conditioning.
Entertainment will be by Dean Lum, Jake Shimabukuro, Ho'okena and Enbious.
