Hawaii

This April-June
romance finds a
merry month in May

MAY normally falls between April and June. This year, however, it seems to have helped connect the two. The "April" being referred to is April Masini, ex-wife of TV entrepreneur Al Masini, and a producer in her own right with offices in Honolulu and L.A. The "June" is June Jones, the UH football coach, and a spring romance may well be under way between the two. While the two attended the UH Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner separately, they were spotted sharing a cozy table after the event at John Dominis, staying until closing time. Since then the two have been seen frolicking in the water on the beach near the Colony Surf where April has an apartment -- the Masinis used to live in a $12 million manse atop Hawaii Loa Ridge. There was more of the same at the Ihilani. That all sounds innocent enough, and maybe it is. But wasn't that April and June sharing dinner for two at the Four Seasons on Maui Saturday night? Looks like May is the merry month for April and June ...

NEWEST "easy rider" in town is Aaron's GM Al Souza III. He's the proud owner of a 2001 Harley-Davidson Dyna Super-Glide, bought at Cycle City. He's not driving it to work yet, but is planning a circle-island run with family chum and fellow Harley owner June Jones. If the latter can find time, that is ... Larry Price figured out that Hawaii boxing sensation Brian Viloria, who stopped by the Perry & Price radio show at the Hanohano Room Saturday morning to promote his fight that night, was on the air for 3 1/2 minutes, nearly three minutes longer than he spent dispensing Sandro Oviedo into retirement ...

Theater go-go-going

THERE'S so much going on in the world of theater at the moment, that I figured out I'd seen four different productions in six days. First was "Fully Committed," the hilarious comedy Tim Bostock is producing at the ARTS at Marks Garage. Then on Saturday night it was on to a delightful "Oliver" at Army Community Theater at Ft. Shafter. When I heard director Stephanie Curtis Conching had cast a girl in the title role, I asked, "And are they calling it 'Olivia'?" But Kaitlin Kiyan was delightful and boyish. ACT artistic producer Vanita Rae Smith decided to nominate her for a Po'okela Award, but as to whether in the "best actor" or "best actress" category, she left it up to the committee ... Then Sunday it was the matinee of "Wit" at Manoa Valley Theatre, featuring actress Bette Burdick as a woman facing the last stage of cancer treatment. It's a part that is sure to earn her a Po'okela nomination, and well deserved ... Topping off the week was last night's "Sea Marks," written by the late Gardner McKay and set in Ireland. It repeats tonight on the dark nights for "Wit" at MVT ...

Real 'Survivor'

TV'S "Survivor" winner wouldn't have stood a chance if she were up against George Kahanu. He was one of the young men from Hawaii sent to occupy uninhabited atolls as part of a military operation from 1935 to 1942. Their stories will be told in Bishop Museum's new exhibit, "The Panala'au Years," opening Saturday. Kahanu will be there to tell how he and other Kamehameha grads endured sharks, rats and ultimately enemy fire. Now that's a real "Survivor." ...
