TULSA, Okla. >> The Hawaiian Islanders went to Tulsa concentrating on stopping receiver Mitch Allner. Islanders lose sixth straight
From staff and wire reports
Perhaps they should have been worrying about the guy who gets the ball to him.
The Islanders lost their sixth straight game yesterday, a 73-48 blowout to the Talons.
"I thought the team played great, regardless of the score," Islanders coach Chad Carlson said. "We played a very good team and cut down on our turnovers."
Hawaii only committed one turnover, but Tulsa didn't give up the ball at all.
Tulsa (6-1) rotates its quarterbacks, allowing Anthony Buich to start the first and third quarters while Joe Phears runs the team in the second and fourth quarters. All the strategy did was keep the game three points closer than two weeks ago, when the Talons beat the Islanders 70-42 at Blaisdell Arena.
Phears entered the game in the second quarter with his team behind 9-7, thanks to a field goal by Jake Huggins and a four-yard TD reception by Morrie Roe from Darnell Arceneaux. The lead didn't last long.
Phears led Tulsa to a 30-13 edge in the quarter, throwing for three touchdowns to go into halftime with a 37-22 lead. The teams traded scores in the third quarter before Phears came back.
Then it was over, as Phears threw two more touchdown passes, while Arceneaux scored once but had an interception returned for a touchdown.
Kemfort and Isaac White each scored two touchdowns for the Islanders.
The Talons outscored the Islanders 59-23 when Phears was in the game.
Although Phears used Allner enough to get him six catches for 82 yards, Keonta Golson was his favorite target. Golson caught three touchdown passes from Phears and finished the game with 81 yards. Sean Love contributed 101 yards and three touchdowns.
Allner torched the Islanders for five touchdowns the last time the teams met, but was held to one this time.
The Islanders (1-6) travel to Fresno next week, when they will play the 1-5 Frenzy. Hawaii got its only win this year when it hosted Fresno in the first week and won 50-47 behind Arceneaux's Player of the Week performance.
"The team kept fighting to the end," defensive coordinator Doug Semones said. "They didn't quit, the guys showed a lot of pride out there."
