1970: A marriage proposal
was a tad hard to swallow

WHEN Doug Mossman decided to slip an engagement ring to his girl, Judee Sarvis, he wanted to make a production of it. So he took her to dinner at the Bistro and saw to it that all the waiters were alerted. When champagne was served, one of the waiters placed the diamond ring in her glass and poured the bubbly stuff over it. As Doug waited for her reaction, she picked up the glass and took a drink, almost swallowing the ring. Doug was so startled he couldn't say anything, and the Bistro waiters stood by frozen. Just as Judee was about to complain there was something in her glass, she saw what it was and nearly fainted. The wedding has been set for June 21 at Kawaiahao Church. (May 19, 1970) ...

ISN'T it ironic that Dick Jensen has agreed to do a benefit for the Farrington High football team -- an organization he was once booted out of. But Dick will be at the Shell June 7 for the team benefit along with Farrington alumni Nephi Hannemann and Earl (Tani) Takaoka, plus Al Harrington, a Punahou grad who was a teammate of Al Espinda, the current Farrington coach. Should be a great show for a good cause. (May 19, 1971) ... It came as no surprise to observers of Liza Minnelli and Desi Arnaz in Hawaii to hear that the two have broken up. On several occasions, Desi was openly curt and hostile to Liza, prompting many people to wonder why she put up with it. Now, it appears, she no longer is. (May 23, 1973) ...

REAL estate counselor Red Morris is just back from the Mainland where he encountered Mike McCormack and wife in L.A. on their way home from England. Going into San Francisco he came across Barbara Dew, the principal broker of Real Estators, and as he was leaving the Bay Area, Morris met Realtor Mike Watts of Kauai, en route home from Mexico, Realtor Tam Tek Lam and wife coming back from Europe and Vi Dolman, president of the Honolulu Board of Realtors, returning from Chicago. The moral of all this, concludes Morris, is "When Traveling Alone, You'd Better Travel Alone." (May 21, 1978) ...

YOU hear a lot of stories about lava rocks being returned to the volcano on the Big Isle, but my favorite arrived at the Volcano House the other day. "Dear Pele," it began. "I'm a very scientific electronics technician and not subject to superstitious bunk, so I took a few rocks as souvenirs in the summer of '78. Since then I've had fires of my tractor, two cars and my house caught fire twice. I'm still scientific, but I can take a hint. Please toss these back in the volcano before someone gets killed around here." (May 25, 1980) ...

ATTORNEY Orville Ross recognizes there's a typo in the flyer put out by the Greek Village on Union Mall, but he's not sure what word has been misspelled. A dish called Chicken Souvlaki is described as "Fish scewred with tomatoes, lettuce and onions served in pitta bread." (May 19, 1983) ... Speaking to an East-West Center audience, Robert McNamara said his memories of Hawaii go back 52 years to his 21st birthday when he arrived here as a sailor on the sugar freighter Maunalei from the West Coast. His uncle, an officer of the Dole Company, had invited him to dinner that night, but he couldn't wait to check out a rumor that the drinking fountains at the Dole Cannery disgorged pineapple juice. So before dawn, he and a fellow sailor climbed over an 8-foot fence, slipped into the cannery and discovered to their delight that the rumor was correct. (May 22, 1989) ...

IT was just too tempting a prospect for Christopher Roll, son of former Star-Bulletin chief photographer Warren Roll. When Christopher's wife gave birth to a daughter, they named the baby Rocken. You got it -- Rocken Roll. And if that weren't enough, they tossed in a middle name: Anna. Yep, she'll be Rocken Anna Roll-in through life. Shades of those famous Silva boys, Sterling and Hi-Ho. (May 23, 1991) ...
