China trade surplus widened 4% in April

Beijing >> China's exports grew 17.2 percent last month, helping widen the nation's trade surplus, the foreign trade ministry announced in its International Business Daily publication. Imports were up 17.8 percent from a year earlier.

Exports rose to $26.7 billion, and imports totaled $25.8 billion, widening the surplus 4 percent to $970 million.

In the first four months of the year, exports increased 12 percent to $91.4 billion, and imports grew 8.8 percent to $83.1 billion. The surplus expanded by about half to $8.2 billion.

Taiwan economic growth estimated at 1.3%

Taipei >> Taiwan's economy probably returned to growth in the first quarter as companies such as United Microelectronics Corp. increased production to fill rising overseas orders for chips and other electronics.

The economy grew 1.3 percent in the first three months of the year after shrinking 1.9 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the median forecast of seven economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Taiwan's economy also shrank 1.9 percent in all of last year, the worst drop on record.

Jobless rate rises in South Korea

Seoul >> South Korea's jobless rate rose for a second month in April as more people looked for work. Unemployment may decline in coming months as companies hire more people to meet demand.

Unemployment rose to 3.1 percent, seasonally adjusted, from 2.9 percent in March, the National Statistical Office said.

Korea avoided the mass layoffs seen in Japan, Taiwan and other Asian countries last year. Asia's fourth-largest economy grew 3 percent last year even as exports fell, thanks to consumer and government spending.

Chilean Bank cuts growth forecast to 3%

Santiago >> The Chilean Central Bank reduced its economic growth forecast for 2002, after four interest rate reductions failed to bolster consumer demand.

Bank President Carlos Massad reduced estimated growth to 3 percent from January's 3.3 percent forecast, the bank said in a statement. The bank expects growth in 2003 to quicken to 5.8 percent, from its prior estimate of 5.3 percent.

A rising, 8.8 percent jobless rate has led consumers to reduce spending, slowing gross domestic product growth to 1.5 percent in the first quarter from 1.7 percent in the fourth quarter. Stronger sales of exports will help to accelerate growth.
