This illegal, 18-inch savanna monitor lizard was surrendered at Honolulu Zoo yesterday by a group of five people and is now in custody at the state Department of Agriculture Plant Quarantine Station. Officials said a monitor lizard can grow to 3 1/2 feet long and can be aggressive with its powerful bite and sharp claws. The department's amnesty program offers immunity from prosecution to owners of illegal pets if they voluntarily surrender the creatures.
