Kamehameha, Punahou
go 1 more round in final

Despite being the top seed in the 2002 Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championship, Kamehameha still felt like it had something to prove.

After a lackluster performance in Wednesday's quarterfinal win, the Warriors came out on fire last night as they cruised to a 73-61 over Kahuku in the first semifinal at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Warriors will vie for their eighth state title in an all-ILH championship at 8 tonight against Punahou, which defeated Iolani 55-41, in last night's second semifinal.

"The first half was not excellent, but it was good," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said. "We won the first two battles and lost two battles. You cannot be comfortable against a team like Kahuku. And you cannot be comfortable because there's still one more game to play."

Cockett may not have felt comfortable but he was pleased with a better all-around performance by his team.

Senior Ashley Ruff had a stellar game with 18 points and nine rebounds. Megan Ching poured in 16 points, eight from the free-throw line.

But it wasn't just the usual suspects for Kamehameha. Lehua Wood had a season-high 13 points and Amber Carter added 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

"We came out hard and with a lot of intensity because of (Wednesday's) game," Wood said of the quarterfinal win over Moanalua. "Our team got together yesterday and talked. We wanted to prove everyone wrong and our main goal was to show that we were No. 1 for a reason. We just had to come out and show them."

And show them they did.

Kamehameha jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter with five different players scoring.

Kamehameha led 25-15 and took advantage of a Kahuku scoring drought in the second quarter. The Warriors went on a 13-2 run that put them up for good.
