Two inmates were taken to the Kalihi Police Station yesterday after they allegedly attempted to escape from the Oahu Community Correctional Center after one of them rammed a van through a heavy-duty chain-link fence during the afternoon.

The facility was in lockdown last night until officers completed their investigation, said Lt. Esawo Morgan of the Department of Public Safety.

The two prisoners, identified as Kenneth Kaleikini and David Scribner, were loading food into a state van to be transported to the Laumaka facility around 3:15 p.m. near Puuhale Road, police said. Scribner then decided to overpower the driver, police said.

During that time, Kaleikini, 40, got into the driver's seat and drove through the interior chain-link fence. The vehicle's wheels got wedged in an indentation in the road before the vehicle reached the second gate leading to Puuhale Road, police said.

The van crashed through one fence before its wheels became stuck in an indentation in the road, halting an attempt to break through a second fence.

A corrections officer detained Scribner, 19, while Kaleikini attempted to hide behind a guard shack, police added.

Authorities detained Kaleikini, and both prisoners were taken to the Kalihi Police Station.

Police said the male driver suffered head injuries and was treated at the prison's infirmary.

The state van's front lights and windshield were damaged in the incident.

Police said Kaleikini and Scribner both face attempted escape and robbery charges. Kaleikini is also facing additional charges including criminal property damage and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, while Scribner faces kidnapping charges.

The last known escape from OCCC took place in January 2001, when 36-year-old Kerbert Silva escaped from the center by climbing over the razor-wire fence. Police located Silva in a vacated townhouse in Makakilo eight days after he escaped. A tenant called police after spotting Silva sleeping in the townhouse.
