Mikey, as the Honolulu Police Department's bigger robot is called, can drag a person away from a dangerous situation. SWAT team bomb technician James Vadset put the machine through its paces yesterday in preparation for a public demonstration tomorrow.

The remote-controlled, wheeled robot that retrieved a suspected pipe bomb from the shoulder of Moanalua Freeway last Friday was the smaller of two robots the Honolulu Police Department received in February, and the freeway incident was the first time it was used.

The robot, which cost $39,000, was dubbed Little Doug by the members of HPD's Specialized Services Division for the division's executive officer, Capt. Doug Miller.

The larger robot, called Mikey, for SSD Commander Maj. Michael Brede, cost $150,000.

The smaller robot is small enough to fit in the aisle of an aircraft, Brede said, while the larger robot is strong enough to drag a person out of a dangerous situation.

Otherwise the two robots have similar capabilities, he said.

The robots will be on display during the HPD Community Fair tomorrow at Kapiolani Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
