Maui cop faces no charges in shooting incident
WAILUKU >> It appears there will be no criminal charges filed against a police officer who shot himself last year and then claimed a suspect did it following a routine traffic stop."To the best of my knowledge, there are no pending charges," said Acting Assistant Police Chief Lawrence Hudson.
On Dec. 4, officer Donald B. Nakooka said he was shot in the abdomen by a man he pulled over along Honoapiilani Highway near Kapalua.
Police launched an islandwide manhunt for the alleged shooter. It was revealed later that Nakooka had fabricated the story.
Maui police said the employment of Nakooka ended on April 15. Police Department officials declined to give further details about the case. But in the past, police Chief Tom Phillips has described Nakooka as having "some substantial personal problems."
Police estimated the cost of the investigation, including overtime for investigating officers, at about $25,000.
Nakooka, who had served on the force for 10 years, had been on paid leave pending an investigation.
