Willis moonlights

Action star Bruce Willis will moonlight as a blues-rock crooner with his nine-member band, the Accelerators, at World Cafe at 8 p.m. June 8.

Tickets go on sale Saturday at World Cafe, Tower Records, Tower Video and Cheapo Music for $22.50. All ages are welcome.

Willis, who is in Hawaii starring a Revolution Studio film, has been considering doing concerts here at World Cafe and the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station since arriving on Oahu in March.

In 1987, Willis organized the band, which the same year recorded the album "The Return of Bruno" for Motown Records which produced a top 10 hit, a remake of "Respect Yourself." The band was featured in the 1988 movie "The Return of Bruno." The band made another album, "If It Don't Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger," in 1989.

Band members include John Bazz, Stephen Hodges, Miles Joseph and Doug Hamblin. Aaron Neville's son, New Orleans funk king Ivan, who has often performed with the band, has not been confirmed for the Hawaii concert.

Symphony ball stars trio

"Bach, Beethoven & the Beatles, Symphony Ball No. V" takes place Saturday as a musical and thematic tribute to three very different composers and styles, from classical to classic pop.

The black-tie event begins at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel with registration and cocktails, with a silent auction continuing to 10 p.m. Dinner will start at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra program at 8:45 p.m. presented by Maestro Samuel Wong and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, along with Principal Pops Conductor Matt Catingub, and dancing to music of the Honolulu Pops Orchestra from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Tickets are $225 per person, with premium tables ranging from $2,250 to $10,000. Call 524-0815, ext. 231.

The event is sponsored by the Honolulu Symphony Associates and the board of the HSO in support of its music education and appreciation youth programs.

Salute to military

In recognition of Hawaii Military Appreciation Month, there will be a military band concert tomorrow beginning at 7 p.m. at Hawaii Theatre.

Musicians from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Hawaii National Guard will perform American standards, marches, songs and patriotic music.

The concert is free but a ticket is required, available from the theater box office prior to the concert. For information, call 545-4300.

Design fair

Designing minds should take in the "Ask a Designer Faire" at Gentry Pacific Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Workshops conducted by ASID professionals will begin at 10 a.m. with "Designing with Feng Shui" by Michael Colgan; "Color in Interior Design" by Joseph Marshall at 11 a.m.; "Creative Problem Solving in Your Living Spaces" by Kathy Gurski at noon; and "Creating Your Own Interior Styling," by Jean Wall at 2 p.m.

Visit the product booths set up with the latest in fabrics, furniture and technologies to desire and inspire.

There will also be 15-minute consultations from 1 to 3 p.m.

Early birds may also want to mingle with the ASID design panel over a breakfast buffet for $8.95 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., take in the workshops, then "wine" down from 3 to 5 p.m. with music, pupus and wine for $15. Reservations for breakfast taken at 538-0597. Call 528-4428 for more information.

Remodel it right

Save yourself from making some costly mistakes with the "Remodel It Right" seminar, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at Ward Warehouse.

Vendors will also stage a mini-expo from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with experts offering tips on financing and hiring an architect, remodeler or landscaper. Representatives from the city Department of Planning & Permitting and state Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs will talk about permits and other issues involving contractors.

Plant sale

Pick up a native Hawaiian plant and meet your friendly state foresters Saturday during the Department of Land & Natural Resources spring plant sale, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at its 2135 Makiki Heights Drive base yard.

Seedlings and plants are 6 inches to 2 feet tall and include introduced non-native and native species such a wiliwili, kuku, kamani, noni and others. Ornamental and native plants will be sold in pint, quart, gallon and 3-gallon-plus sizes and range from $3 to $14. Threatened and endangered plants in the same sizes range from $6 to $20.

Experience the "Birdlife of Queensland" via a slide-show presentation by Claudia Gaber at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Garber is a natural-history and environmental writer. The slide show includes photos by Queensland naturalist Adrian Walker and features the red goshawk, cassowary, golden bower bird and other species. Call 233-7323 for reservations and information.

Prenatal to preschool

The New Baby Expo has 150 exhibitors showcasing products to nurture growing children. The event hosts a baby crawling contest and Hawaii's Largest Baby Shower. Speakers and experts on prenatal through preschool topics will be featured in a demonstration area, with subjects including baby showers, belly casting and birth options such as midwives for birth delivery at home and births in aquadula tubs.

Check out the chocolate-covered birth announcements in a fortune cookie, with a listing of your baby's birth date, weight, length, etc., ready for families to hand out to visitors all within three hours after giving birth.

The Foremost Baby Crawling Contest will take place 2 to 3 p.m. tomorrow; limited to first 80 contestants. Registration starts at 2 p.m.

The World's Largest Baby Shower will take place at 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, and dads are welcome. There will be games and prize giveaways. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. on site.

There will also be a Makana Mother & Baby Maternity Fashion Show beginning at 1:20 p.m. Sunday.
