Colors of Hermes

Free scarf-printing demonstrations by artists from Hermes begin today in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center Ilima Court, adjacent to the store.

Demonstrations take place at 11 a.m. today, repeating at 11 a.m. and 2, 4 and 7 p.m. tomorrow through Tuesday.

Since 1937, Hermes has created more than 1,000 scarf designs. Artists work for a period of six months to a year before a design is approved for transfer onto silk, with about 15 designs introduced annually.

The event is free, and parking will be $1 an hour for a maximum of five hours at the RHSC garage with Hermes validation.

Auction for eyes

Think celebrity can rub off on you? The Discovery Fund for Eye Research is hoping so.

The organization is hosting its "Seeing the Stars" auction fund-raiser from May 23 to June 2 on eBay. Log onto http://discoveryfund.org/auction_ update.html during that time to find out what's up for grabs.

Up for bid so far are mostly glasses or sunglasses worn by celebs such as Andrea Bocelli, Clint Eastwood, Carrie Fisher, Angela Bassett, Dustin Hoffman and Henry Fonda during performances or public events.

There will also be personal items from Marilyn Monroe's estate, a copy of the original screenplay from "The Ten Commandments" signed by Charlton Heston and a bent spoon once owned by Boris Karloff.

Proceeds will go toward research on eye diseases.

The voice cometh

Actor James Earl Jones will make a special delivery to new mothers at the maternity ward of The Queen's Medical Center at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Jones, who provided the voice of Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" series, appeared in countless films and television series, and who is currently a spokesperson for Verizon, will talk about his love of reading while presenting special packages to new mothers along with a $25,000 check to Read to Me International. The funds will be used to launch the organization's new "Books for Babies" program designed to educate new mothers about the importance of reading to their babies from the time they are born.

"With Verizon's support, the Books for Babies program will advance us tremendously in our goal to increase literacy levels throughout Hawaii," said Lynne Waihee, president of Read to Me International.

Statistics have shown that there is a correlation between children's success on literacy tests and parents' involvement in reading to and with their children.

Verizon sponsors community outreach programs across the nation designed to increase help people of all ages to read and become computer literate.

Read Aloud wins grant

In other reading news, Read Aloud America has received a $15,000 grant from the Hawai'i Community Foundation.

The family literacy program offers simple activities to help share the pleasure and enrichment reading brings.

Since its first program in January 1999, RAP has served more than 40,000 participants through 20 programs in Hawaii's public schools.

Jam tickets go on sale

The "I-94 Summer Jam" at the 50th State Fair will feature Hip Hop/R&B princess Ashanti, Amanda Perez, and Ja Rule.

The performance takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 2 at the Aloha Stadium parking lot.

Tickets, $25, and go on sale tomorrow at Ticketplus sites.

Ashanti Douglas, 21, in April released her self-titled debut, "Ashanti" on which the lead single is "Foolish."

Perez's debut album is "Where You At?" on which she sings and plays keyboards, drums, guitar and bass. Rapper Ja Rule Ja Rule's solo debut album is "Venni, Vetti, Vecci."

'Moonlight and Magic'

The Aloha Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association's annual fund-raising gala June 28 will have a bit of Latin flair provided by Mariko Lyons and Claudio Otero, who will demonstrate the tango.

The black-tie event beginning at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom will also include a silent auction offering more than 250 items, and there will also be a "Sweet Memories" dessert auction.

Stay for after-dinner music provided by Hula Joe & the Hutjumpers until 10 p.m.

KITV anchors Pamela Young and Gary Sprinkle are honorary chairs of the event.

Now in its 13th year, the event raises funds to support programs and services for Hawaii residents suffering from Alzheimer's.

Tickets are $100 per person and VIP table reservations for 10 are also available at $1,000 Gold, $2,000 Platinum and $3,000 Diamond.
