Dole Plantation helps you
find a way to get lost

SOMETIMES THE small things provide the biggest reminder that you're getting older. I know it's not much, but I find it hard to believe it's been four years since I first got lost in Dole Plantation's maze while home on break from college.

This weekend, the plantation's Pineapple Garden Maze, listed as the "World's Largest Maze" in the "2001 Guinness Book of World Records," celebrates its birthday in style. They make it easy for kamaaina to make the trek out there for the party, too: The entertainment, keiki activities and military vehicle display are all free, and admission to the maze itself is two for the price of one all day ...

Na Leo, Ka Hula O Ululani, Aloha Ekahi, the Firehouse Band and Hypersquad are scheduled to perform during Saturday's celebration. The family fun starts at 10 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. Dole Plantation is located at 64-1550 Kamehameha Hwy. in Wahiawa. Call 621-8408 for details ...

ALSO CELEBRATING hard this weekend is 97.5 KPOI-FM. They'll invade Wave Waikiki on Saturday night. Another hard-to-believe but nonetheless true tidbit of information: 19 years have passed since the departure of the original 98 Rock from Honolulu's airwaves.

The station will also keep up with the proud radio tradition of giving away free stuff, and you can enter to win a trip to see Nickelback, Course of Nature, Jerry Cantrell and Default in concert. Happy Gets Lucky will perform at the bash, and guys won't want to miss the wet T-shirt contest.

Doors open at 10 p.m. for this 21-and-over birthday party. Call 599-5764 for more info ...

IF YOU'VE been down to the Esprit Nightclub at the Sheraton-Waikiki lately, you may recognize the voice singing our national anthem at tomorrow night's Brian Viloria fight. Tino Ibach, lead singer of the group Tino & the Rhythm Klub, didn't think twice when Uncle Tom Moffatt called to offer the gig. Doesn't hurt that ESPN will be on hand to film the fights, either ...

You can also check out Tino along with Adney Ataba, Elmo Custodia, Les Fernandes, Hemingway Jasmine and Ricky Ricardo Wednesday through Saturday at the Sheraton-Waikiki starting at 9 p.m. Call the hotel for information and reservations ...

LOCAL BOY B.J. Penn represented Hilo to the fullest last weekend on pay-per-view, scoring a second-round TKO over Paul Creighton at Ultimate Fighting Championship 37: High Impact. The 23-year-old lightweight, nicknamed "The Prodigy," is also a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is described on the UFC.tv Web site as "the most decorated jiu-jitsu athlete in America."

Someone please tell T. Jay Thompson and Monte Cox to book this bad boy for Superbrawl and bring him home ...

ALSO HOLDING it down for the 808 state on the big rock is the Big Island band Pepper, returning home after touring the West Coast in support of its April release "Kona Town."

Kaleo Wassman, Bret Bollinger and Yesod Williams plan to spend the next month or so playing Oahu, Maui and the Big Island before hopping a plane and heading off to be a part of the Warped Tour's West Coast tour.

The three have been pushing their "Kona Dub-Rock" hard over the past year or so, performing with the likes of Shaggy, Born Jamericans, Eek-a-Mouse and Pato Banton.

You can catch Pepper on Saturday at the Hawaiian Hut along with buddies Go Jimmy Go, also joining the Warped Tour. An ID that says you're at least 18 gets you past the bouncers; doors open at 10 p.m. Call 941-5205 ...

ONE LAST homecoming to share -- Marty Dread is back from Las Vegas after headlining the "Pure Hawaii" concert at the Station Palace Casino last week. He'll play Dave and Buster's tomorrow night, and Waterfront Cafe and Cabaret on Saturday. If you can't make it to D&B's, check out Dread's performance live on Island Rhythm 98.5 that night starting at 11 ...
