As the high school sports season closes this week, planning for the next school year will soon get under way. Athletic directors to hold
annual conference on KauaiAthletes of the Week
By Jason Kaneshiro
jkaneshiro@starbulletin.comThe Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association's annual conference will be held June 9-11 at the Kauai Marriott.
The state's five leagues present their concerns and proposals to the various sport committees for discussion. The items that pass through the committees are then put before the entire association for a final vote.
Any recommendations passed by HIADA face final approval by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's executive board. The agenda for this year's meeting has yet to be finalized.
State tourney broadcasts: The finals of the state girls basketball and baseball tournaments will be televised live on KFVE-TV (Channel 5) this weekend.
The girls basketball title game is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. Friday.
Starcomm Wireless will provide radio coverage of the quarterfinals, semifinals and final on 650-AM.
The baseball title game will air at 8 p.m. Saturday on KFVE and 650.
KMVI Radio will broadcast all games involving Maui teams back to the Valley Isle.
Kai pulls double-duty: Kahuku's Krisha Kai was a tough person to keep up with last week.
The Red Raider junior helped the Kahuku girls basketball team defeat Moanalua 45-36 in a quarterfinal of the OIA tournament on May 7. Two days later she qualified in three individual events in the preliminaries of the state track and field meet at Mililani.
She then played in the OIA championship game against Kalaheo last Friday and turned around 24 hours later to win state championships in the girls high jump and 100-meter hurdles.
She also finished third in the triple jump.
Football players honored: Sixteen high school football players will be honored by the Hawaii chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame for their academic and athletic achievements at a banquet on Sunday.
The honorees are Dominique Acorda (Kohala), Kainoa Casco (Lahainaluna), Taualai Fonoti (St. Louis), Renolds Fruean (Waipahu), Ric Fukushima (Moanalua), Inoke Funaki (Kahuku), Alberto Gilroy (Radford), Michael Hom (Pac-Five, Hawaii Baptist Academy), Pili Kitashima (Kamehameha), Todd LaFountaine (Punahou), Preston Lingaton (Kamehameha), Brenden Nakata (Kamehameha), John Siofele (St. Louis), Chris Tunoa (St. Louis), Jeffrey Veal (Aiea) and Kekoa Vincent (Kamehameha).
The banquet is set for 6 p.m. at the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Former Arizona and Hawaii football coach Dick Tomey will be the keynote speaker. Veteran football official Earl Galdeira will be honored as a Friend of Football at the banquet.

Smart play: Two members of the Kailua baseball team are among the school's valedictorians for the Class of 2002.
Chad Nishizuka, the Surfriders' starting catcher, and first baseman Jarid Kawamoto were bestowed the honor for their academic excellence.
"They can help everybody else by teaching them about academics and being role models, letting them know that school comes first," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "They're able to separate school and baseball. Some people let one or the other interfere ... but they don't let school affect their baseball and they don't let baseball affect their schooling."
Roosevelt has also done well in the classroom. The Rough Riders have a collective grade point average of 3.1. Senior outfielder Corey Higa has a 4.6 GPA.
