Hanalei's Andy Irons widened his lead in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour ratings yesterday.



Irons flattens all-comers
for victory in Teahupoo

Hanalei's Andy Irons surfed to the Billabong Pro Teahupoo championship in Tahiti yesterday, beating Australia's Luke Egan in the final.

With the victory, Irons earned a $30,000 first-prize check and increased his ratings lead in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour.

It was Irons' second victory in three WCTevents this year, with the other win coming in the Rip Curl Pro at Australia's Bells Beach in April.

Irons also scored victories over Shea Lopez in the quarterfinals and Trent Munro in the semifinal yesterday.

UH's Judd player of year for second year in a row

Hawaii shortstop Kate Judd won her second straight WAC Player of the Year award yesterday, leading three teammates on the all-conference team.

Judd led the league in hitting (.414) and runs scored (14) in league games.

Judd became the first to win consecutive Player of the Year awards.

The Wahine nearly swept the infield positions on the all-WAC first team, with first baseman Stacey Porter and second baseman Natalie Gonzales being honored along with outfielder Denise Dahlberg.

Jamie Southern of Fresno State won the Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year while James Pinkerton of Tulsa was judged the league's best coach.

Komine to start tonight for 'Huskers against Jays

Shane Komine will make his first start since April 5 when he takes the mound against Creighton tonight.

Komine will be on a pitch count after coming out of the bullpen and throwing three scoreless innings against Cal Poly on Saturday.

Komine was also selected to the Verizon Academic All-District VII team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Komine has a 3.213 GPA in Sociology.

Hawaii's Golden Gloves to be decided Saturday

The Hawaii State Golden Gloves boxing championships will be held tomorrow and Saturday at Wahiawa District Park beginning at 6 p.m. each day.

The winners of each weight class will represent Hawaii at the national tournament in Denver, Colo., June 17-22.

Bloch, Hoesterey take swimming awards

Cheyne Bloch and Morgan Hoesterey were named swimmers of the year by the Hawaii swim team yesterday.

Mike Gowdy and Maggie Roberts were named the Divers of the Year while Kurt Boehm and Sarah Farr were judged to have the most outstanding performances.

Konstantin Dubrovin and Katia Sarakatsani were the freshmen of the year.
