SURF'S UP, ALL WEEKEND LONG

The National Weather Service has posted a high-surf advisory due to a rising southerly swell that is expected to continue through tomorrow. Surfers took advantage of the swells yesterday off Kewalo Basin, where, according to forecasters, waves reached 5 to 8 feet. Surf along Oahu's south shores is expected to reach 6 to 10 feet today, while west-facing shores are expected to reach 5 to 8 feet.

Washington Middle School celebrated its 75th anniversary yesterday with a luau, entertainment and a "Time Walk" where current students interviewed alumni. Among yesterday's festivities was a "Jan Ken Po" contest, where students competed for a chance to appear on the TV game show of the same name. Eighth-graders, from left, Kelsey Rita, Sheena Macapagal, Melekaufusi Pepa and Melissa Loli cheered for their classmates in the contest.

Local actor Terence Knapp, playing the role of Father Damien, led a procession of Catholic school students to the state Capitol yesterday for a gathering to honor the beloved Kalaupapa minister. Students from several schools surrounded the statue of Damien at the Capitol.
