The Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin Index is a price-weighted index designed to measure the performance of Hawaii-based companies. The index was developed with a base value of 100 as of December 31, 1999. A chart of the index which shows the weekly performance of its members is published weekly in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Bank stocks continue strong run

Central Pacific Bank parent CPB Inc. and City Bank parent CB Bancshares Inc. saw their stocks again hit 52-week highs this week as the banking sector continued to be the best performer in the Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin index.

CPB, whose shares are up 39.1 percent this year, rose 3.6 percent this week to end at a 52-week high of $40.92. CB Bancshares, which hit a 52-week high of $40.20 on Tuesday, advanced 2.6 percent to close the week at $40. Its shares are up 13.5 percent in 2002.

The top performer was Aquasearch Inc., whose 12.1 percent gain represented less than a one-point move. The company, which is in Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy, closed yesterday at 6.5 cents.

The worst performer was Cyanotech Corp., which dropped 9.1 percent despite clinical results that showed its BioAstin nutritional supplement showed improvement in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.
